Our Ophthalmic Day Surgery The Canberra Eye Hospital operating theatre was established in 1982 as one of Australia's first free standing ophthalmic day surgeries. It was, and is, committed to providing advanced ophthalmic surgical treatment available in modern facilities, designed to make your experience as comfortable and pleasant as possible.
The day theatre is utilised by 5 ophthalmic surgeons, 7 anaesthetists, 6 nursing staff and5 administrative staff. As an ACHS accredited facility, the highest standards of sterility and equipment are maintained.
Before your visit
Details of pre-operative and post-operative requirements are always provided at the relevant consultation visits. These are also available here. Plan to bring a companion and driver to your operation and put aside the half day of your appointment. Check with your health fund for your level of cover and gap due.
Some procedures, including cataract surgery, will necessitate a visit the day after. Patients from outside Canberra may need to arrange overnight accommodation. The staff can help with recommendations. Organise a few days of reduced activity for immediately after your surgery.

Informed Financial Consent
We are accredited with the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards and with all major private health care funds. IFC (informed financial consent) is an important part of pre-operative preparation. Amongst funds, benefits for the same procedure e.g. cataract surgery, vary depending on level and duration of membership. Canberra eye Hospital will help with advice on procedure categories and identification numbers. However, it remains the patient's responsibility to check with their individual fund concerning exact benefits and gaps.
Your surgeon's fees (surgical IFC) is always provided by the consultation office prior at the time of booking. The anaesthetist's fees can be estimated. Contact details for the specific anaesthetist are provided.
On the Day
- Try not to arrive early.
- Do not drive yourself. Bring a companion both to drive and support you.
- Take your usual medications. However, don't take insulin if you don't have breakfast.
- Wear loose comfortable clothing and footwear.
- Bring referral or introductory letters from your GP for the anaesthetist.
After your visit
Before leaving, you wil be given detailed instructions on post -operative care and appointments.
With major surgery, printed post-operative instructions are provided. It is normal to receive a post-operative telephone call within 1 or 2 days from the Hospital staff. Any unexpected pain or vision change should be reported to your surgeon.

Canberra Eye Hospital is Canberra's only fully quality accredited Eye Hospital. Initially, it was granted this prestigious award in 1996, the maintenance of which requires a continuing program of quality assessment activities across all areas of service delivery, particularly sterility and equipment maintenance. The award was renewed for a further four year cycle in December 2006.
